Cork based theatre company, Theatre Makers Ltd, are staging Patrick Kavanagh's epic poem 'The Great Hunger' in the Half Moon Theatre from 6 to 8 November. Directed by Ger FitzGibbon and starring Jack Healy, this one man show deals with the trials and tribulations of its central character, Patrick Maguire, a small farmer in post-treaty Ireland. First published in 1942 the play looks at how Maguire fails to seize day after passing day as he watches in despair his life edge closer and closer to an unconsummated conclusion. Through a beautiful tapestry of words and images, Kavanagh masterfully mediates all the turmoil of Patrick Maguire and his world.
Theatre Makers gave this play its first outing at the Granary Theatre earlier this year and since then it has toured to a number of venues throughout Munster. This is Jack Healy's second one man show and the Cork based actor and playwright has himself written extensively and has worked as an actor with other Cork based companies including Corcadorca, Graffiti and Meridan. Ger Fitzgibbon is the former head of Drama and Theatre Studies at UCC and has worked extensively on various productions in Cork.
'The Great Hunger' will run at the Half Moon Theatre from 6 to 8 November at 8.30pm and tickets are available at Cork Opera House on 021-4270022.
