The bodies of a man and a three year old girl have been recovered from the sea off the coast of West Cork. The alarm was raised shortly before midnight after gardaí responded to a call that reported the man, who is aged 50, and his daughter as missing from their home in Ballydehob.

A search of a farm and the surrounding areas at Foilnamuck, Ballydehob was undertaken while the Valentia Coastguard searched the nearby coastline.

The body of the young girl was located in the water close to the shoreline shortly before 2am while the body of the man was discovered a short time later in the water nearby. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The bodies were then removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will be carried out this morning by assistant State Pathologist Dr Marie Bolster.
