CK13052012RoyKeane06_1.jpg After just two matches, Ireland’s European Championship has come to an inglorious, even embarrassing, end. On the road to qualification, we managed to successfully kid ourselves into believing that the Irish team could actually make an impact at the tournament. Two defeats, eight goals and a lot of singing and partying later, reality has finally dawned; the Irish squad is the worst in the tournament.

    Well, that was a bit of an anti-climax, wasn’t it? Ireland’s first appearance in the European Championships for 24 years fell flat within three minutes of kick-off against Croatia. Apart from the large Irish crowd who, even in a recession, found the money to travel, it didn’t quite turn out like Stuttgart 88.

    It’s going to be pretty special. Euro 2012 kicks off on Friday and for the first time since 1988, Stuttgart and all that, Ireland will be part of it. The fiesta of football that is any major football championships is Mecca for any football fan but the presence of Ireland means much added excitement and even non-football fans should be drawn in.

    First things first; Croatia were the better team. Certainly, Ireland suffered from some bad luck, notably with Croatia’s third goal, and could, even should, have been awarded a penalty late in the game.
