Tom Doorley: The joy of a home grown bloody Mary
Food Posted on 24/05/2012 by Tom DoorleyI don’t suppose I consume more than one or two bloody marys in any given year but a good one is a joy forever, and more of a meal – or at least, a starter – than a drink. As a cocktail, the bloody mary’s history is shrouded in mystery but it seems to have originated in the United States between the wars, more than likely in New York.

Tom Doorley: Tomato, tomayto
Food Posted on 17/05/2012 by Tom DoorleyThere’s nothing quite like picking your first tomato. When I was a teenager I used to go into the greenhouse at home armed with a salt shaker, pluck a ripe tomato, lick the skin so that the salt would stick and then take a great big, juicy, messy bite.

I am probably one of the few people in the country to have a spurtle. Now that may sound like an expression of mild outrage (“he has an occasional spurtle about the state of the health services”) but in fact, it’s a small wooden implement for stirring your porridge as it cooks.

Tom Doorley: Wild is not always best
Food Posted on 03/05/2012 by Tom DoorleyA lot of people think that wild food on menus started with Noma, the Scandinavian establishment which was named as Best Restaurant in the World (a concept which is just as daft as the best song in the world or the best shoe in the world).

Moroccan style braised lamb shank

Moroccan Style Braised Lamb Shank
This is a refreshing take on our traditional lamb shanks and this North African twist is simply divine to eat and relatively simple to cook. While the cooking time does take longer, it's certainly worth the wait for the final result which is mouth-watering.
