The sound of the A:Volution
a-volution
There are a number of events in this year's Cork Midsummer Festival that blur the distinctions between experimental sound and art. Foremost amongst them is the interesting sounding A:Volution, a very exciting venture featuring a 40-piece chamber ensemble and choir, combined with live electronics, striking visuals, and surround sound. Nice!
A:Volution is one of two projects to step up to the main festival from last year’s Solstice section. Ronan Leonard’s excellent ‘Adventures of a Music Nerd: 1 Guy, 2 World Cups’ is the other.
Created by Peter Power, a series of events in verse unfold in a unique electro-acoustic chamber music setting. Co-composed by David Duffy and conducted by John O’Brien, a chamber ensemble and choir will perform with interactive live electronics, voice sampling, designed lights and AV, in an all-immersive surround sound.
A:Volution takes place at the Curtis Auditorium, Cork School Of Music on Saturday 30 June at 10.30pm and Sunday 1 July at 4pm. Tickets are €15, €12 concession.
Also taking place is Strange Attractor featuring Anthony Kelly, Danny McCarthy, Mick O’Shea, Irene Murphy and David Stalling which returns to the Crawford Art Gallery for a special improvised live sound art event. Admission is free and takes place at the Crawford Art Gallery on Saturday 30 June from 12 noon - 4pm.
The Memory Room is a new publication and sound and visual installation by pioneering Irish sound artist Danny McCarthy. The installation is curated by Anthony Kelly and will be subject to daily change, drawing on the Guesthouse’s ‘memory of place’. It continues at The Guest House until Friday 29 June from 12 noon - 3pm.
