Fatal fire on Wellington Road

A man in his 20s has died following a fire on the northside of the city this morning. 

The fire, which broke out in a flat in Charlemont Terrace on Wellington Road, occurred at around 4am this morning. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains have been removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The name of the man has not been released yet but he is understood to be from Cork city originally. The area where the fire took place has been sealed for technical examination and residents in six other flats surrounding the one in question were evacuated by the fire services on arrival. 

Several units of the fire brigade services were involved in controlling the fire.

Witnesses are asked to contact Mayfield Gardaí on 021-4558510.
