Camps for kids
This summer has been nothing less than disappointing. Children and adults alike look forward to summer holidays as it's the one time of year we take a break from the hustle and bustle of school runs and homework. Generally, summer is a time we can take pleasure in being relaxed and leisurely. Unfortunately, this summer hasn't lived up to our expectations as we huddle in our homes away from the rain. Children's summer camps are usually dependent on outdoor activities. If your child is bored to tears from watching TV and looking out the window thinking of what could of been, there are some camps out there that are not weather dependent. And, in a country like Ireland, where the four seasons come in one day, these camps are badly needed.
Summer camp has always been thought of as an outdoors thing. Canoeing, sports and nature walks have always gone hand in hand with traditional summer camps. While it's great for kids to get into the great outdoors and take part in team activities, it may not be the idea of fun your child has in mind. All children have their own individual talent and interest, while one child may like football another may like to paint. Going to a camp with other children with similar interests may make the experience all that more enjoyable. Why not send your child to a camp that they will enjoy while nurturing their talents and socialising with their peers?
This summer in Cork there are a number of camps that will meet this particular criteria. If your child is passionate about performing arts, they will enjoy Starcamp. This unique camp will cater to those who dream of making it big in Hollywood or Broadway. Not only will the children be mentored in singing, dancing and acting but the camp also aims to increase the self esteem and confidence of the children who attend. Of course, confidence building is key at an early age, especially if they want to be the next Lea Michele!
The Gaiety School of Acting is hosting several different Summer Camps in Cork this July and August for adults and children alike. From 9 July, Young Gaiety classes are taking place in the South Parish Community Centre, Sawmill Street, Cork. Choices include the Summer Drama Camp (aged 7+) where children will learn acting from the experts or for those older who are interested, they will get behind the scenes in the Make a Movie camp (12 -16 years) where they will write, act, light and do the sound in their very own movie.
More advanced teenagers (aged 13+) can perfect their acting skills in the Young Gaiety Studio where they can learn to prepare for auditions. There is also a course in Advanced Acting for Film and TV and a YG Weekend Masterclass for those who are 'Seriously serious about Acting'! Adult Summer Drama this year runs at the Firkin Crane from 9 June for 4 weeks, on Monday and Tuesday evening from 5-7pm and again on Monday 13 August for four weeks. Beginners are welcome so don’t be shy!
If your child prefers a more relaxed activity and has talent with a paintbrush or pencil, perhaps an art programme will be more suited to them. Newbury House is a dedicated art space in the heart of Mayfield in Newbury House Family Centre. Newbury House Family Centre has been in the heart of Mayfield since 1986 providing a range of services to people in the community. The centre aims to improve the standard of living by providing confidential, non judgmental and helpful services to families and individuals.
The primary focus of the childcare service is to support families from the locality by providing high quality affordable childcare. They offer preschool and crèche childcare services and during the holidays they provide fun filled summer camps for children from preschool age.
The Cope Foundation in Montenotte are holding a summer camp for children with physical disabilities and visual impairment. Rebel Wheelers will give children a chance to take part in basketball, karate and floor volleyball, to name a few.
