Residents in the Douglas, Ballinlough and Rochestown areas have been urged to remain extra vigilant and cautious after a series of burglaries and bogus calls were made recently.

Gardaí have described how callers to houses represent themselves as employees of Local Authorities indicating that they need to check gas, power or water supplies. While the homeowner is preoccupied with one of these callers a second person enters the house and steals property.

Homeowners are being asked by authorities to check the bona fida of all callers and always ask for identification.

Gardaí insist that genuine callers will always provide identification and asked for concerned resident to immediately contact the Gardaí.

Fianna Fáil leader and TD in Cork South Central echoed the call from the Gardaí for residents to be vigilant in light of the recent series of robberies.

“I would urge everyone in Ballinlough, Douglas, Rochestown and the surrounding areas to be on high alert for these bogus callers,” said Deputy Martin.

“If anyone does knock on your door, always ask for ID first and if you have any suspicions, don’t let anyone in and immediately contact Gardaí. People should try and keep an eye on their neighbours, particularly elderly ones, and ensure they are not being targeted by bogus callers. Genuine workers never mind being asked for their identity badges.”

Advice on all Crime Prevention is available on the Garda Website www.garda.ie in the Crime Prevention section.
