The Cork couple who were involved in a crash in England on Friday remain in a critical condition in hospital.

The couple from Meelin in North Cork lost their 18-month-old son and unborn child in a head-on collision at Hamelin Way in Torquay, Devon, around 3pm on Friday.

The other driver involved in the crash was arrested at the scene but later died in hospital. He was a Polish national but lived in Britain.

The couple lost their son Oisín in the crash. They were airlifted to hospital in Plymouth and doctors operated on Elber Twomey, 36, but were unable to save her unborn child. It is thought that she was pregnant for at least five months.

The Twomeys were travelling to Pembroke to catch the ferry back to Rosslare when the crash occurred.

Con Twomey, 39, who was a well known hurler in the Meelin area, underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care.

A police major crime investigation team and serious collision investigation unit are looking into the circumstances of the crash which was witnessed by a police officer. Because the driver of a police car witnessed the crash, the force has referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The road where the crash took place was closed for 10 hours and 25 emergency vehicles attended the scene along with three air ambulances.

It is understood the car driven by the Polish man swerved into the Twomeys’ vehicle.
