Buttevant Road closed Thursday 12 July
Motorists are being advised that road closures will be in operation through Buttevant tomorrow, 12 July from 7am due to the Cahirmee Horse Fair being held in the town.
Diversions will be signposted through Doneraile and Newtwopothouse and Gardai have said that motorists can expect extra traffic on the N20 Limerick / Cork Road where Buttevant is located.
The Cahirmee Horse Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Ireland and is reputed to date back to the time of Brian Boru. The Duke of Wellington bought his horse, Copenhagen at the fair which he rode at the Battle of Waterloo and Napoleon also bought a horse at Cahirmee.
The Fair came to Buttevant from Cahirmee Fair Field in 1921 and has been held in Buttevant since. The fair involves the buying and selling of horses on the street and a horse show will also be held there where hundreds of visitors are expected to visit the town.
