Meet Adam, the 'apple' of Opel's eye
Meet Adam, Opel's small urban car and its first entrant into the A-segment, which is expected to hit these shores early next year.
The car will feature a host of technologies including an onboard infotainment system that will make online applications available in the car through smartphones such as Android and Apple iOS.
It measures almost 3.70m in length (1.72m width excl. mirrors), and as versatile three-door is will not look out of place in modern urban environments.
In the spacious cabin, the Adam, says Opel, offers seating for four people. The car will be targeted at trendy urban customers.
“The Adam will be the only A-segment car that will be exclusively built in Germany and it will receive its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show show in September.
Initially, the car will be offered with three petrol engines (1.2 l 51kW/70 hp, 1.4 l 64 kW/87 hp and 1.4 l 74/100 hp) combined with a five-speed manual transmission.
All powertrains are available with an ecoFLEX technology pack including fuel-saving Start/Stop technology. Later, a new generation small petrol engine will make its premiere in the car, featuring direct injection turbocharging. The new engine will be combined with a new six-speed manual transmission.
Adam comes in a choice of three unconventionally-named trims: JAM is fashionable and colourful, GLAM offers a more elegant and sophisticated setting while SLAM will appeal to those with energetic and sporty attitudes.
To set off each of these so-called 'mood worlds', there are three roof colours - including a LED lit 'starlight' roof trim - and other premium inspired distinctive design elements.
Adam is the first car with Opel’s new infotainment system that brings its owner’s smartphone capabilities to the vehicle and also adds further to them including smartphone connectivity for Apple iOS software while it's also compatible with Android operating systems.
The new infotainment system makes selected smartphone content including internet based applications such as GPS navigation available in the cabin. It collects the content and displays it on the seven inch, high-resolution and full colour touch screen which also provides quick and intuitive access to various user friendly control functions via five easy to navigate menus. In addition, new media sources such as MP3 players, iPodsTM and tablets can be brought into the Adam thanks to Bluetooth and USB connectivity. There is a plug-in outlet for music devices that do not use USB or Bluetooth connections.
Video, or a personalised slide show, can be played when the car is stationary.
Advanced Park Assist (APA II) will also be available along with Side Blind Spot Alert (SBSA) which also uses ultrasonic sensors. There's a heated steering wheel adding another premium touch to the cabin.
The Adam's Electrical Power Steering (EPS) includes a dedicated CITY mode which at the flick of a switch increases power assistance at lower speeds. The comprehensive ESP, with Hill Start Assist, is also standard across the range. Other safety features include two sets of ISOFIX points and child seats can be attached to the 50:50 split foldable rear bench.
The car will be available to order after its official world premiere in Paris (29 September – 14 October, 2012). First cars will hit the showrooms in January 2013.
