Gig of the week:
The Amazing Ultra Sonic Music Studio @ Half Moon Theatre, Mon – Fri 3 Aug
Not so much a gig as a chance to be part of a gig. The Amazing Ultra Sonic Music Studio offers anyone a chance to write and produce their own song. It takes all week at the Half Moon and features the theremin – a scientific instrument that anyone can play! Organisers invite anyone to help produce a Cork anthem for the end of the world, which will be released and launched into space! Ring 021-4905221 for details.
Comedy of the week:
Kevin Gildea @ City Limits Comedy Club, Sat 26 November, 9pm
Stand up is far from Kevin Gildea’s only skill but is something that he excels at. It is something that has long been involved in, as he began his comedy career in the influential sketch group Mr Trellis, alongside Barry Murphy and Ardal O' Hanlon. They co-founded The Comedy Cellar, Dublin's longest-running comedy club.
He often appears on radio and RTÉ arts show ‘The View’ which ended recently. He is also a writer and actor. He also has a comedy-music act The Kevin Gildeas, which made a short film ‘NoNoNo’.
Film of the week:
‘A Royal Affair’ @ Triskel, Sun at 6pm, Mon – Wed at 8.30pm
This Danish period drama tracks the extraordinary events that took place at the court of Christian VII of Denmark, which included adultery, insanity and sado-masochism. Sadly, the film omits the cross-dressing of the young queen, Caroline. She is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician – who tries to reign in the excesses of the aristocracy and introduce modern ideas. It also gives a sense of the origins of Denmark’s liberalism.
