More than 150 golfers including Cork footballers Graham Canty, Daniel Goulding and Alan Quirke tee’d off at Fota Island Golf Club last week for the Bon Secours annual Golf Classic.  The event, which was organised by the Golf Society at Bon Secours, was in aid of two great Cork causes, Cúnamh and Cork Cancer Research Centre.

This year’s golf classic saw numerous familiar sporting heroes ‘link’ up for the charities, including Irish rugby legend Donal Lenihan and Cork GAA Doctor Con Murphy. Also there on the day were Donna Roche, Stephen Sisk, Michael Griffin and Anthony Mc Loughlin from the Bon Secours Golf Society, Helen Gough from Cúnamh, along with Helena Slattery and Laoise Cotter from Cork Cancer Research Centre, who together hope to raise €10,000.

A lot of familiar faces from the medical community also went ‘above par’ for the charities on the day including David Gough, Gordan Barry, Kamron Ghori and Gerard O'Connor, who came down from the Bon Secours Hospital in Dublin for the event.  That evening, hospital staff from catering, maintenance , purchasing, medical and management were in full swing at the buffet dinner, where Coleman Golf and a number of local companies generously sponsored prizes.

The money raised at the event will be put towards ground breaking research at Cork Cancer Research Centre into new treatments for cancers that currently respond poorly to conventional therapy and Cúnamh’s support group services at the Bon Secours Hospital, which assists patients diagnosed with cancer, and their families, with counselling, advice, transport, weekend breaks and therapies.
