Gig of the week:

Chic @ Liss Ard Festival on Sat 4 Aug at 11pm

The lineup on Saturday for the restarted Liss Ard Festival in Skibbereen is particularly strong with Chromatics, Lisa Hannigan, Bob Mould and Nicholas Jaar but disco legends Chic are the best draw of the whole weekend. Their performance at Electric Picnic a few years was superb and they are not far from being a perfect festival band. A huge back catalogue from Nile Rodgers means every song is killer, including their signature tune 'Le Freak'. The rest of the day’s lineup should be great too.

Art of the week:

Sean Keating: Contemporary Contexts @ Crawford Art Gallery until 27 Oct

Curated by Dr Eimear O’Connor, this is a major exhibition that aims to re-evaluate Keating’s contribution to Irish life as an artist and as a cultural commentator. The Crawford has long held some of Keating’s most important paintings including the iconic ‘Men of the South’ painted in 1921. His romantic-realist style helped to create images that have informed our own sense of Irishness. This major exhibition seeks to place him in his context as a modernist thinker.

Film of the week:

‘Jaws’ @ the Triskel Arts Centre from Sun 5 – Wed 8 Aug at 8.30pm

‘Jaws’ has a lot to answer for, as the film that created the monster, sorry, that is the movie blockbuster. It is possibly Steven Spielberg’s best film and remains a stunningly gripping film. There are few films as taut and tense as this one and watching it remains a huge pleasure. Grab the chance to see it on the big screen.
