Fundraise for a future free from cancer
Help win the race against cancer by joining the Breakthrough Cancer Research team, who fundraise for innovative work of Cork Cancer Research Centre, at this year’s Evening Echo Women’s Mini Marathon.
Despite the many breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer there are still 21,000 people diagnosed with the disease in Ireland every year and 7,000 of those are fatal. By supporting cancer research, you can help to reduce these statistics.
The team at Cork Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) works directly with surgeons and physicians throughout Cork and Ireland who are treating patients with the aim of finding new options for poor prognosis cancers, and over the past ten years they have already brought five treatments successfully to clinical trial.
CCRC is currently developing new non-invasive treatments for lung, breast, oesophageal, colorectal and ovarian cancers, and as the research centre does not receive any annual stipend for its work, it is dependent on the support of fundraisers.
The scientists at CCRC have already figured out why certain cancers are not responding to conventional treatments like chemotherapy and have even developed ways to kill such resistant cancers. However they need funding so they can take their findings from the laboratory into the clinic and most importantly to patients. This could significantly change the outcome for patients with the most difficult to treat cancers and it offers real hope to them and their families.
Cork Cancer Research Centre is based in laboratories at the Mercy University Hospital and University College Cork.
Research means hope. Hope for a future, free of the fear of cancer.
