Making strides
Groups of walkers decked out in high-visibility vests have been spotted lately out and about in Mallow. They are part of the Brídhaven walking club which is part of the outdoor activities program at the Mallow Nursing Home and in keeping with their 'keeping as fit as we can be' policy.
The Walking Club ventures out a number of times a week, weather permitting. This activity is hugely popular with the residents who enjoy setting off bright and early to catch fresh morning weather. They relish the social aspect of chatting in the easy company of their friends while stretching their legs through the pretty town of Mallow.
It is not surprising in these recessionary times that walking has become one of our most popular pastimes in Ireland and for the older generation walking is an excellent way to maintain or improve fitness. Walking is known to reduce a number health risks and have numerous health benefits including lowering blood pressure, improving heart health and boosting circulation.
Regular exercise is particularly beneficial for the older person as it can prevent or delay diabetes and heart trouble, can reduce arthritis pain, anxiety and depression as well as helping older people to maintain mobility and independence.
“We are particularly proud of their diverse activity program which is led by Senior Activities coordinator and local woman Trish O’Sullivan who plans and implements an interesting and varied daily programme with the assistance of Mary Rea and Joan Kinsella, Activities Coordinators at Brídhaven,” said Paul Rochford, Registered Provider at Bridhaven.
