Baby-proofing your home should a be a major priority for any parent. Whether it is your first child or one of many, babies need to be living in a safe environment where they can wander around in a room without harming themselves. There are a few steps necessary to achieve this as anyone who has ever looked after a child will tell you, they can find trouble in an empty room!

There are dozens of things around the house that could be potentially harmful to a child that may not even be obvious and can perhaps be overlooked initially but by baby-proofing your home you will lessen the chances of accidents happening. A happy baby leads to happy parents and peace of mind is something every parent strives to achieve.

When a baby begins to crawl, anything breakable will need to be kept out of their way - it's surprising how fast a baby can move on their legs considering they cannot even walk yet! Babies also have a massive habit of putting absolutely everything that will fit in to their mouth so little knick-knacks will all need to be put out of reach. Simply place things on a higher shelf or in to a box or a drawer that they cannot open.

Another problem babies have is bumping off things, look around at tables and furniture in your home. Anything that is pointed or has glass or rough edges, remove from the room or put padding or foam edges to keep your child safe. Babies learning to walk will be very unsteady on their feet and fall, often so you need to make sure that your home is a fall-friendly area!

It goes without saying medicine needs to be kept out of reach at all times. Every cleaning product should also be kept well out of reach, a baby's curiosity knows no bounds and even the whiff of a washing detergent would not deter them so if you have any cabinets or doors in your home that a baby can open, then child proof them with child-proof latches so that they cannot access anything inside.

The kitchen is one of the more dangerous rooms in the house for your baby. All kitchen drawers and cabinets should have child-proof locks on them and knives should be moved to higher locations so that the children cannot reach them. One problem that may not be that obvious at first are fridge magnets. Make sure there are none of your fridge that can be pulled off and then put in their mouth.

Child-proofing your home can save you from so many potential accidents and as silly as it sounds, sometimes its just as easy to get down on the floor to see where potential hazards may lay and then correct it. It is not hard work but it is necessary with children and everyone can play safer and happier in a baby-proofed home!
