Guerilla Days in Ireland

Last night 30 members of the Cork football team went to see the very popular play ‘Guerrilla Days in Ireland' at the Everyman Palace Theatre. Could this be manager Conor Counihan’s masterstroke to get them ready to face a Donegal team of ferocious intensity in the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park next Sunday?

If the tale of how Tom Barry made his home of West Cork ungovernable fro the British during the War of Independence with 310 men against over 12,500 British soldiers, then nothing will!

And what better way to face a game against Donegal that could be the closest thing to warfare on a football pitch, then to be inspired by the exploits of Tom Barry and his men?

Tom Barry's 'Guerrilla Days in Ireland' is a classic account of the War of Independence in West Cork by one of the foremost IRA commanders. Tom Barry was certainly a hero and not just an Irish hero either.

He was a hero to Che Guevera, an inspiration to him, even. Guevera, with some Cork roots himself, even tried to get him over to Cuba to train his men.

The play is a triumph, featuring four great actors who bring Tom Barry and his whole flying column to life.

'Guerrilla Days in Ireland' runs at the Everyman Palace Theatre until Saturday 25 August (excluding Sunday 19 August). Tickets are €25, concessions are €20. Student tickets cost €7 from Monday to Wednesday.
