The true-life story of a South American pilot landing near Mallow in 1983, and how the town helped him get back in the air, is to get its network premiere on RTÉ One tonight.

The Runway, directed by Ian Power, tells the tale of how the people of the town came together to build a runway for the South American pilot who briefly caught the imagination of the nation, as fans of Reeling in the Years will be aware.

The film features a host of Irish actors along with James Cosmo of Game of Thrones fame, Kerry Condon (Intermission) and Demián Bichir, seen most recently in 'Che'.

The film also tells the story of Paco, a young boy without a father who adopts the pilot and convinces the town to build a runway to get him home.

The 2010 film is on RTÉ One at 9.35pm tonight after the news and weather.
