Clonakilty avoids major flooding

The town of Clonakilty was again at the centre of flood threats on Tuesday as a two hour deluge of rain threatened homes and businesses along the main streets. Emergency services in the town were quick to respond and began pumping water in several streets that had six to eight inches of water within a short space of time. There were serious high water levels in parts of Kent Street, Rossa Street, the Western Road and at Harte's Corner.

Customers at the Teach Beag Bar in O' Donovan's Hotel were forced to abandon the bar last night where a traditional music session was taking place.

"Within minutes the water was coming into the bar and around 10.15pm we had to evacuate the customers from the bar because we didn't know how bad it would get. But within half an hour the water was gone again so we didn't suffer any real damage," said Dena O'Donovan, owner of the hotel on Pearse Street.

"I think one or two premises in the town got flooded but thankfully it was nothing like the scale of the flooding the town experienced in June. The fact that it was a dry day probably stood to us unlike back in June where we had experienced days of rain. The drains are basically too small to cope with the amount of water that is coming down."

Most parts of Cork County and City experienced the torrential downpour but there were no reports of any flooding or serious damage unlike the night of 28 June which saw severe flooding affect Clonakilty, Glanmire and Douglas.
