The National Software Centre (NSC) has revealed expansion plans on its tenth anniversary by increasing jobs and expanding its business by investing in post-incubation stage companies. Speaking at the ten-year anniversary celebrations of the NSC at it's headquarters in Mahon, Shemas Eivers, director of the NSC said that supporting companies like Treemetrics and Mingoa is a vital element of job creation.

"Companies in the post-incubation stages of development require a strong peer network and a collaborative environment in which they can grow. Here at the NSC, we have been providing support to a fledging IT sector for the last ten years and now we want to invest in the future to provide increased employment opportunities for growing companies," said Mr Eivers at the gala lunch, barbecue and tree planting ceremony at its headquarters in Mahon today.

The event was also attended by representatives of two sides of Cork's political landscape, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Simon Coveney and Fianna Fáil TD Micheál Martin.

"The NSC has made a significant contribution to many companies in IT developing in the Cork area and beyond and I wish them well for the future, playing an important role in the IT sector in the region," said Mr Coveney.

The NSC was founded in 2002 to create an IT hub in Cork which would provide a catalyst to spur the growth of an IT sector in the region and it was founded by Shemas Eivers, Teddy McCarthy, Aidan O'Driscoll and Donagh Kiernan and is a public private partnership between the IT industry and Cork City Council.

The NSC continues to actively invest in technology companies still in growth stages and currently has 80 companies based there and is also home to the worldwide coding learning club, Coder Dojo. Up to 4,000 people are now employed in IT in the Mahon area, further cementing the NSC's reputation as world class technological and commercial hub.

It's been a while since we've had another joke jobs press release. They're a bit like the Russians announcing another record harvest. As a business, our experience in dealing with government and Minister Coveney is that they are uninterested in Cork jobs. Opening supermarkets in Morocco or wherever seems much more interesting. When the yanks start pulling their cash and investments back home, Cork will see the next wave of recession. Now its civil engineers, next it will be IT guys as Ireland fails to back indigenous enterprises. Fig leaves like this announcement do nothing to halt that reality.
