A+ for Cork students
There was great success for a number of Cork students who received their Junior Certificate results yesterday. In Regina Mundi Secondary School pupil Cut Aina Hannisa was overjoyed to receive one of the best set of results in the country when she got 12 A's in higher level subjects.
The student, who is from Douglas, was one of just 19 people in the country out of over 60,000 students who sat the Junior Certificate this year. Three other pupils in Mount Mercy College, St Aloysius, Carrigtwohill and St Mary's Charleville also received 12 A's yesterday morning.
A total of 108 students got 11 A's while 259 students scored 10 A's including Mary Quill who is a student at St Patrick's College on Gardiner's Hill. Mr John Ring, Principal of St Patrick's College said: "In keeping with previous years our results were excellent. They are a reflection of the endeavors of both teachers and students over the past three years. We are delighted that all students realised their full potential and they can now look forward to the Leaving Cert with confidence."
Almost 600,000 individual grades in 26 different subjects were delivered to almost 60,000 pupils in Ireland yesterday. The overall numbers sitting the examination has increased by 3.4 per cent on last year. 3421 females and 3404 males took the Junior Certficate exams in Cork in June.
Meanwhile Alcohol Action Ireland urged a safety warning ahead of last night's celebrations. Charity Director Fiona Ryan said: "It is a time of well deserved celebration. For some teenagers their celebration plans will involve alcohol – some will feel that they have to drink to celebrate even though they may not want to and others will feel even pressured to do so.
"It is important to remind teenagers that ‘not everybody is doing it’ and support teenagers not to drink, half of teenagers do drink regularly but half don’t, There is a real and immediate obligation on alcohol retailers – pubs, nightclubs, supermarkets and off-licenses to ensure that they are not selling alcohol to underage drinkers"
