The eighth annual Sports History Ireland conference will be held in University College Cork today. The panel of speakers includes international, British and Irish historians.

The conference will cover different aspects of sports history in Ireland, a topic that is surprisingly overlooked, considering the importance of sport in Ireland.

There will be a myriad of speakers on a variety of topics from the early history of soccer in the Free State to cricket in post-famine Ireland. Other gems include Pat Bracken’s lecture on hurling from 1840-1884.

Also of interest might be Irial Glynn’s lecture ‘Éamon Bulfin: Argentina’s best ever hurler’!

They are more than 20 speakers comprising of the cream of Irish and British based academics in the field of sports history. The conference is free and open to everyone to go and listen.

The conference is organised by Sports History Ireland, a society which organises conferences on the history of sport, encourages academic and popular study of the subject, and promotes the publication of articles and books on the history of sport.

See sportshistoryireland.com for further details. The conference takes place at the Department of History, UCC today from 9.30am.
