Referendum wording expected today
The wording for the upcoming Children’s Rights Referendum will be confirmed this morning at a press conference with the Minister for Children, Frances Fitzgerald TD.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny confirmed to the Dáil yesterday that the vote would be held on Saturday 10 November, only the second time ever a vote will be held on a Saturday.
Cork Senator Deirdre Clune welcomed the announced, indicating the advantages that a Saturday vote will have.
“The decision to hold the vote over the weekend is a positive step and I hope that it will increase the number of voters on the day,” said Ms Clune.
“Working parents who may have found it difficult to vote during the working week now have the opportunity to cast their vote on a more convenient day. The Children’s Referendum is a unique opportunity for Ireland to place the well-being of children as our highest priority.”
The former TD also insisted that, if passed, the referendum will have a deep impact on children and the way they are treated in Ireland.
“The Children's Referendum puts the children themselves at the focus of every decision that is taken concerning their welfare. I am confident that there is a sufficient period of time to fully debate the issues surrounding the Children’s Referendum.”
A Referendum Commission is also to be established after the wording is released today. Opposition parties are being briefed ahead of the press conference, which will also be attended by the Taoiseach and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore.
