700 Apple employees began work in their new offices on Half Moon Street in the centre of Cork city today. Apple announced earlier this year that it is to expand its operations in Cork city with the creation of 500 new jobs over the next 18 months.

Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central, Dara Murphy, described it as “a great opportunity for local businesses in the area, as this influx of people will provide a welcome boost to the local economy, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

“Restaurants, shops and other small businesses in the area have struggled over the last number of years due to the recession so I am delighted that they now have this opportunity to recover and I look forward to see the area thrive once again,” he said.

“Cork city is renowned throughout the country as being a fun and dynamic place to be and I am confident that Apple will play a big part in keeping this spirit alive. The new three-story office block has been constructed to cater for its expanded workforce, with jobs being filled in tech support and online sales.

“Apple’s Cork offices play a vital role in the company’s international operations. Apple is valued at over $600 billion and its decision to expand in Cork is yet more proof of Ireland’s ability to attract the world’s top technology firms.”

Apple has been in Cork for more than 30 years.

It was one of the first multinational high-tech companies to locate in this country and it has a huge complex at Hollyhill.

It is Apple's European headquarters with staff here also serving the Middle East, India and Africa in areas such as technical support, online sales, manufacturing and finance.

Great for those who work and can get a job with apple... despite constantly advertising for customer support staff they have yet to employ me. I only have years of experience in customer care and have sent my cv at least 100 times by now and they don't evan bother responding...
