Plans to develop a €150 million event centre on the site of the old Beamish and Crawford site, which will cater for 6,000 people, has been given the green light by An Bord Pleanála this week.

A total of 24 conditions were applied to the planning permission, which supported an earlier decision by Cork City Council to allow the Heineken Ireland/BAM Property project to go ahead.

Developers plans to build 46 student apartments, 10 artists’ studios, an eight-screen cinema, two pedestrian bridges, shops, bars, restaurants and galleries, as well as the 11,339sq m event centre.

The decision will now be contested, however, by the National Conservation and Heritage Group, which says it will appeal An Bord Pleanála’s decision to the European Parliament.
