A Spanish man is being treated in CUH for a serious head injury after he was attacked in Cork city last night and beaten with a golf club and a number of other weapons.

Gardaí have arrested a number of youths after the attack, which took place around 10pm last night. A Garda spokesperson said that “it would appear to have been a case of unprovoked assault”.

The victim is believed to be a man in his late 30s from Spain. He is described as being in a critical but stable condition.

He was walking down White Street near Douglas Street in the city centre with two friends when they were attacked by a group of teenagers who were drinking in the area.

There were around six to eight people involved, whose age ranged from late teens to early twenties. The man received a serious head injury in the attack and his male friend was also attacked.

Gardaí arrived at the scene quickly and arrested a number of teenagers and secured weapons used in the assault. A Garda spokesperson told the Cork Independent that there has been an increased level of policing in the area recently. The injured man is being treated in Cork University Hospital for serious injuries but is now reported to be stable.

A number of youths were arrested and brought to the Bridewell Garda Station for questioning. Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.

The scene where the attack happened has been sealed off for a technical examination.

Gardai wish to appeal for witnesses or to anyone that was in or around the area of White Street around the time of the assault to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021-4522000, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line on 1800-666111 or any Garda Station.
