'Cork English' app for iPhone

Two teens have invented an app that translates Cork slang into English.

Phrases including 'Shove Wesht' (move over), 'Acting the gowl' (messing about), and 'up the back of Leap' (in the middle of nowhere) are included in the app, which could come in useful for visitors to the Rebel County.

Liam Horgan and Austin Keane, transition year students at Mount St Michael's in Rosscarbery came up with the idea when they heard locals in West Cork using phrases that wouldn't be heard outside of the county. Liam originally from Birmingham and Austin from Dublin, both moved to Dublin at the age of four and later met at the Leap branch of Foróige, a youth organisation. This is where the two came up with their idea to create a Cork English app. "We love the Cork accent and slang," said Liam Horgan.

The app was designed in England at a cost of €250. Actor and renowned Cork native Pakie O’Callaghan obliged by doing the voiceover and the App is just about to go live on the Apple App Store. The Corkonian agreed to donate his voice if ten percent of the profits were donated to the Simon Community.

If the app proves succesful, the boys will branch out to other counties, creating apps for Dublin, Limerick and Cavan, among others.

The app will be available to buy next week at a cost of 99 cent.
