A woman died this morning on the Fermoy/ Mallow road after her car collided with a truck around 9.35am. The crash occurred on the Castletownroche to Mallow road at around 10am.

A nine-year-old girl who was travelling in the car was uninjured while the driver of the truck was also uninjured.

The road is closed and diversions are in place. The road will remain closed for a number of hours.

Gardai have implemented diversions as a result. From Fermoy, motorists will have to exit the N72 at Monanimy and take the local road to Killavullen, and back onto the N72. From Mallow, join the N73 at Olivers Cross, exit the N73 at Skenakilla Cross and take the local road to Castletownroche  and back onto the N72.

Racing is on in Mallow today, with the first race at 5.10pm and last at 8.25pm. Gardai say the diversion route is suitable for horse boxes but caution is advised.

They also advise that motorists should avoid the area if possible.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Fermoy Garda Station on 025-82100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666111 or any garda station.
