The Cork Independent has teamed up with Foróige and the Street Performance World Championship (SPWC) to highlight both the voluntary work and the spectacular visual spectacle that both groups bring to Cork culture.

The Cork Independent will run a poster competition for the 63 Foróige clubs in the city and county.

The posters will illustrate the work that Foróige does in the local community, either through charity ventures such as Meals on Wheel or assisting members of the community.

“It is fantastic that the Street Performance World Championship is returning to Cork again this July, it will bring great colour and activity to our summer,” said Jarlath Feeney, Managing Director of the Cork Independent.

“I am delighted that the Cork Independent will be press sponsors of the SPWC. We will be keeping everyone in Cork updated on the plans for the events, what acts will be performing and the programme for the Championship. So, read all about it here in the Cork Independent.”

Mr Feeney also paid tribute to the work of the youth group Foróige, which has 63 clubs in the city and county and over 3,500 members. Foróige also boasts an involvement in 19 projects with 32 staff and 422 volunteers.

“It will be a great opportunity for them to showcase what each club does for their community and possibly win a cash prize for their club. I urge every club to get involved.”

Posters entered by the clubs will go up on the newspaper's Facebook page where the applicants will be whittled down to five finalists through public vote. The five finalists will feature in the Street Performance World Championships as well as being included in a special edition of the paper this summer. Foróige's aim is to enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the development of society.

"Foróige is delighted to be involved in the Street Performance World Championships,” said Eric O’Brien, Foróige Southern Area Manager.

“We have thousands of young members who no doubt are very excited about this event. I'm encouraging all our members in Cork to get involved in the street performance poster competition.”

The deadline to enter the Facebook competition is 1 June, with entries to be sent to siobhan.cadogan@foroige.ie. Voting begins on 7 June via Facebook. The five finalists will be announced on the 5 July with the overall winner included in a special supplement on the SPWC on 12 July.
