Body painters attempt world record
Wearing your birthday suit in public is becoming something of a trend this summer in Cork. People from all over the country and even a few from overseas will strip down and become walking pieces of art on Saturday 28 July.
Cork Body Painting in association with Camden Palace Hotel plan to beat the World Record for the most people with their bodies painted.
Keira O'Connell from Douglas is one of the organisers, she recalls the first time her body was painted, "You pay attention more to people's faces. You get excited to see how the design will turn out."
The Cork Body Painters have been active for just over a year and hold events every two to three months. The organisation stemmed from the Naked Bike Ride, which also takes place in Cork to promote safety for cyclists. The bike ride will take place after the body painting in Camden Palace on 28 July.
"We decided to attempt to beat this world record because we are a small community and we wanted to promote what we do and get more people involved. We hope that cyclists for the Naked Bike Ride will come early and get painted," Keira says.
Cork Body Painting encourages people of all shapes and sizes to take part in the world record attempt. Keira says, "People do this for different reasons. It's great for people who are not body confident. The large hips are transformed into the curve belonging to something else. You don't feel naked once you're painted."
The artists and models alike, spend four to five hours creating a moving piece of art. Photographers will be at the event throughout the day to capture the event and everyone will be sent a photograph after the event.
Once everyone has been transformed, participants will be invited for celebratory drinks in the city centre, after they have covered up what they don't the public to see.
"People react positively to the art work. It gets a lot of attention, people stop us to take pictures," says Keira.
