A local radio station's annual three day 'Giving for Living Radiothon' has raised a staggering €391,723 for cancer services in Cork.

The event, organised by Cork's 96fm, took place between Thursday and Saturday (24-26 May).   All daytime programmes on the station were broadcast live from a special studio at The Mercy Hospital for the three days with regular live inserts from teams at CUH and Marymount Hospice.

All money raised goes to support cancer services at the Mercy University Hospital, Cork University Hospital and Marymount Hospice.

This was the fifth annual event and over the first three years (2008 – 2010), Radiothon raised in excess of one million euro for the children’s wards at the Mercy Hospital and CUH. In 2011, the focus switched to supporting cancer services and Marymount Hospice was included along with Cork’s 96fm’s two previous partners.

Chief Executive of Cork’s 96FM and C103 Kieran McGeary said: “we are completely astounded at the generosity shown yet again by the people of Cork despite the ever difficult economic situation. The figure of €391,723 will increase in the coming days as more money comes in. Cork’s 96fm Radiothons have now raised in excess of €1.7million over five years and I am very proud of all of our staff for the hard work and professional approach to this event each year.”

Meanwhile Frankfield Gospel Choir raised over €1,000 on Saturday in Douglas Court, singing for the Radiothon.

The choir has been in existence since September 2008, with over 30 members of all ages drawn mainly from the Frankfield/Grange/Douglas areas. They meet every Monday night and sing at mass regularly in the Church of the Incarnation, Frankfield.

The choir prides itself on performing for many local organisations and groups including St. Finbarr’s Hospital, the COPE Foundation, the HOPE family support group, cardiac support groups, well known charities and Frankfield Golf Club. They have also been invited by other parishes to participate in their celebrations and concerts.
