One thing you’d change about Cork: I’d like to make sure that everyone who lives in Cork feels that they are part of the city
When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?
A secret agent or a scientist.
Tell us about your career progression to your role today:
I graduated in medicine from UCC in 1991, then trained as a general practitioner in Cork. Following that, I worked for three years as a GP in New York. I was a college lecturer in epidemiology and public health for three years. For the past 16 years, I have been a GP in Blackpool and I also teach on the UCC GP training programme. I was elected as a councillor on Cork City Council in 2014, and in 2019 I was elected the Lord Mayor of Cork city for 2019.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?
I enjoy meeting people from all aspects of Cork life.
What motivates you?
The fact that every day is totally different.
What advice would you give your 15-year-old self?
I would say to do the things that make you happy.
If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?
I’d like to be a teacher or a scientist.
What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?
Becoming a GP in Blackpool.
Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?
My parents, who supported and encouraged me every step of the way.
What is the life dream now?
To keep going as I am, and to see the kids reared!
How do you switch off?
I go running (slowly!)
What is your favourite Cork memory?
Growing up in St Luke’s, with the freedom to roam the city.
What is your favourite place in Cork?
I love walking around Shandon on a summer’s evening.
Do you have a favourite quote or motto?
‘Sometimes the journey is the destination.’
When are you at your happiest?
When I’m hanging out with the family and engaging with people.
Any regrets?
None.
What is your hidden talent?
My kids tell me I have none!
What might we be surprised to know about you?
11 years ago I took part in the Spencer Tunick mass nude photo in Blarney Castle as part of Cork Midsummer Festival!
