Clearing of vehicles in Douglas to begin this week
The removal of trapped and destroyed vehicles is to begin on Wednesday according to a statement released by Douglas Village Shopping Centre.
There are estimated to be as many as 50 destroyed cars, and over 100 vehicles isolated due to concerns over the structural safety of the carpark. Douglas Village will be in direct contact with the car owners affected.
Cranes will be used to remove the vehicles as the entry and exit ramps to the carpark are believed to be unsafe for use. The clear-up is estimated to take seven days.
Due to the intensity of the fire, estimated to have been between 600-1,000 degrees Celsius, the structural integrity of the carpark has been compromised, and will require partial demolition.
When the cars have been removed, crews will begin work on the damaged areas of the structure. Demolition is expected to begin next week. The shopping centre will remain closed until the demolition work is complete, due to safety concerns.
The ESB will be cutting power to the centre. There is no estimated time for the reopening of the centre. For further information, contact the Douglas Village Shopping Centre helpline at 087-9509800.
