Public asked to climate workshops

The Green Party has dubbed the planned public information days on climate change as “first class”.

Information days on the topic will be held at Cork City Hall this Friday and Saturday as part of a public consultation process around its draft climate change adaptation strategy.

Green Party Cllr Oliver Moran commended city officials for their work, and invited the public to take part.

He said: “Hats off to the officials in City Hall for showing what real public consultation is about. This really is a first class opportunity for everyone to engage with City Hall on the topic, no matter your level of expertise.”

Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr John Sheehan said: “Climate change is impacting on Cork and Cork City Council is drafting this strategy so we can be a more resilient city. We are asking the general public, schools and community and voluntary groups to come along on Friday and Saturday.

“You can visit information stands, talk with experts on climate action and make a submission to the Cork City Council Draft Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Entry is open to all.”

Workshops, facilitated by Dr Tara Shine who runs award winning social enterprise, Change by Degrees with Madeline Murray, are being held on Saturday, at 11am and 2.30pm.

Tickets for these workshops are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis via Eventbrite or corkcity.ie.

Dr Shine said: “Cork city is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change like flooding, storms and heatwaves and the adaptation plan the City Council has prepared proposes actions to reduce the risk citizens are exposed to.

“The information days provide an opportunity for people to learn more about climate change and how we can manage and prepare for it. I hope people have their say by popping in to the information event, signing up for the workshops and making submissions to the consultation process.”

Met Eireann, the Environmental Protection Agency, Sustainable Energy Agency of Ireland, Energy Cork, Climate Action Regional Office, Environmental Research Institute, Cork Nature Network, the National Transport Authority, Water Communities Offices, An Taisce, Cork Environmental Forum and UCC are some of the organisations who will have stands at the Concert Hall from 9am-5pm on both days.
