Train at Cork Counselling Services

The Lord Mayor this week paid a visit to Cork Counselling Services to learn about the work the team is doing on a daily basis.

As a doctor, he is also very much aware of the work done by Cork Counselling Services who have been active in the city since 1982. “We as a society fail when people feel they are not listened to or that they do not matter,” he said.

Cork Counselling Services, based in Fr Mathew Street, provides therapy of the highest ethical and professional standards to all members of the community regardless of financial means, beliefs, ethnicity or background.

In 2018 Cork Counselling Services saw 230 new clients and currently has 356 in total. These clients were seen regardless of background or ability to pay. The organisation is a not-for-profit charity which receives part funding from Tusla and HSE.

Cork Counselling Services also offers professional training to would-be counsellors or people who want to improve their relational skills for work purposes.

Karen Walsh, Head of Training, said: “The best path to becoming a counsellor is in a practice-based environment, where trainers counsel as much as they teach and where theory, research and practice come together. The training takes place in the context of a busy city centre counselling practice linking theory to the real world. The training is creative and experiential

with highly skilled facilitation.”

Cork Counselling Services’ Training Institute is Ireland’s longest standing Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited course provider in the country.

Moreover, some of the courses are accredited by Coventry University in keeping with the pending Statutory Regulation of counselling in Ireland. The Institute is now enrolling for part-time study from October 2019.
