Julie Connelly, Manager of Cork Volunteer Centre.

Julie Connelly, Manager, Cork Volunteer Centre

When you were small, what did you want to be as a grown-up?

I always wanted to be involved in law or politics.

Tell us about your career progression to your role today:

I’ve had a very mixed career. When I moved to Cork straight out of university, I worked as a retail assistant in a pharmacy for a while. Then I worked in Cork City Council, from there I moved to the Department of Foreign Affairs, then UCC and finally Citizens Information before taking up my post as Manager of the Volunteer Centre last October.

What is the most enjoyable aspect of what you do?

My job is so varied and interesting. One minute I’m involved in organising Cork's Volunteer Awards, the next I’m delivering training on governance, the next meeting community groups in North Cork who need volunteers. It’s a fantastic and very positive place to work.

What motivates you?

My team in the Volunteer Centre is amazing. They are so dedicated, they motivate me to do better.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Don’t sweat the small stuff so much. And you’ll never have it all figured out.

If you weren’t in the job you have, what would you be doing?

Tour guide in Kenya.

What is your greatest life or career achievement to-date?

Has to be getting the PhD.

Who has had the biggest influence on you in your life?

My parents and my aunt Kathleen.

What is the life dream now?

The immediate dream is to continue to build on existing success in the Volunteer Centre and provide a great service to the community and voluntary sector in Cork. Other than that – win the Lotto and retire in style!

How do you switch off?

Yoga

What is your favourite Cork memory?

I have spent the best years of my life in Cork. I have too many fond memories to share but if pushed I would probably choose my wedding which was held in Flemmings, Tivoli.

What is your favourite place in Cork?

My home.

Do you have a favourite quote or motto?

Not really but I suppose ‘always try your best’.

When are you at your happiest?

Walking on the beach or eating in a nice restaurant.

Any regrets?

None that I’d share.

What is your hidden talent?

I make a mean roast chicken.

What might we be surprised to know about you?

I’m afraid of heights.
