CinemaWorld closes after 25 years in Douglas

The end credits are set to roll at the cinema in Douglas next week as it shuts its doors for the last time.

CinemaWorld in Douglas has confirmed that it is to close on Thursday 10 October.

The decision to close the cinema was taken some time back, following a fall in attendances as the direct result of increased competition.

Following the closure of the cinema, work will immediately begin on the transformation of the building into an Aldi store.

The owners of CinemaWorld are confident that this will ensure a continued vibrancy on this important site in the centre of Douglas village.

Brendan Flannery of CinemaWorld said: “CinemaWorld has traded in Douglas for the past 25 years, opening in August 1994. We will be sad to turn off the projectors for the final time on 10 October, but the cinema has struggled in the face of stiff competition in recent years.

“We thank our staff, and our loyal customers who supported us throughout the years.”

He added: “We are confident that the site has a bright future with the arrival of Aldi. We look forward to sharing memories with our regular patrons of the cinema over the coming week.”

The development will see a substantial investment into the area, with 20 new permanent jobs created at the Aldi store, and up to 60 construction jobs supported during the building phase.

Construction of the store will begin in January next year, with plans to open in the last quarter of 2020.

The 1,000 square metre store will be powered by 100 per cent green electricity, with free car parking available for customers.

The new store will be Aldi’s second in Douglas with a store already on Grange Road.
