Power outages in localised areas

A band of severe winds and heavy rainfall is expected across the country according to an advisory warning by Met Éireann, as Storm Brendan reaches Ireland.  

The ESB are already reporting power outages in Clonakilty this morning, as well as in Blarney, Tower, and surrounding areas, with several reports of power outages in other parts of the county.

Met Éireann has warned members of the public to expect countrywide severe winds and damaging gusts as well as heavy rain and possible thunder. “Status Orange wind warnings in force for all counties with Status Red warnings in operation for marine areas. Winds may reach stronger levels locally and for limited time periods. Gale force southerly winds will extend countrywide during the morning, with severe and damaging gusts.”

The orange warning is expected to reach its peak in the Munster area between 11am and 3pm, with storm-force winds and dangerous conditions during these hours. There is also a risk of uprooted trees, downed branches, structural damage, and localised flooding, with reports of small scale flooding in the city centre.

Cork County Council tweeted: “Please note Cork County Council Civic Amenity Sites and Recycling Centres will not be open this morning and will remain closed for the duration of the storm for the safety of staff and patrons.”

A red warning has been issued for coastal areas, with expectation of heavy rain, and flooding – in both coastal and localised areas. The Irish Coast Guard has asked members of the public to stay away from exposed beaches, cliffs, and harbours along the coast today.

Fastnet Lighthouse has recorded gusts of up to 80km per hour this morning, with the expectation of greatly increased gusts as Storm Brendan makes its way across the country.
