Young fundraiser Lucy Hall is ready to sacrifice her communion dress to help children in need.

Hall the best

A very thoughtful eight year old girl has decided to turn her Holy Communion disappointment into an inspirational act of kindness.

Lucy Hall was supposed to have her First Communion on Saturday but, due to Covid-19 restrictions, it has been cancelled.

Disappointed, Lucy decided that she would turn her attention to children less fortunate than her and, with the help of her mother Jill, established the Crazy Charity Communion Campaign GoFundMe page.

“There's a big build up to the communion. She got her dress months ago,” Lucy’s mother Jill told the Cork Independent.

She added: “Anyone who knows Lucy will know what a caring child she is. She's the most thoughtful and kind child ever. She's always thinking of others.

“She'd often talk about children who are less fortunate, and whenever she'd have money, she'd ask 'can I give some of my money to them?'.”

To raise money, Lucy will don her pristine communion dress this Saturday and undertake a number of mucky outdoor and indoor challenges.

“We want to see how dirty we can get the dress. We live near Ballybrack Woods so she's going to go up there and roll down the field in her dress and splash in the puddles,” said Jill.

“She might dye her hair too and dye bits of the dress,” she added.

The GoFundMe page went live at the end of April with an initial goal of €150, but as of yesterday afternoon, it had already raised just under €400.

All proceeds raised will go directly to children’s charity Barnardos Ireland, a group Jill says was chosen by her and her husband for the great work they do. Barnardos is a non-governmental organisation and registered charity which has been helping vulnerable children in Ireland since 1962 by offering services and support to children and parents who need it most.

Jill continued: “I'm so, so proud of her. When we set up the page, we thought it would be great if she even made €150.

“We think Barnardos are fabulous and we've been watching all the work they've been doing during Covid-19 and before.”
