Mitchelstown set for streetscape improvements
Mitchelstown is set to get some much-needed improved street infrastructure soon with work beginning this month.
The Mictchelstown works are part of the Fermoy Municipal District Footpath Project, planned between July and October at various locations in the Fermoy Municipal District and will form part of Project ACT supporting the reactivation of Cork county.
The works are contracted to Linehan Civil Engineering Ltd and valued at almost €200,000 and include the construction of new pedestrian crossings and new footpaths, as well as renovations and repairs to existing footpaths.
As part of the project, two new age friendly zebra crossings are to be installed on Upper and Lower Cork Street in Mitchelstown, in line with the Cork County Council’s Age Friendly programme and their recently launched CARE (consider, assist, respect, empathise) guidelines, developed to ensure that public spaces are as safe as possible for older and vulnerable people as our towns and villages reopen.
Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley welcomed the news. “Mitchelstown is already well established as an age friendly town and the addition of these zebra crossings will go hand in hand with other plans to enhance the town, giving the people of Mitchelstown and its visitors a welcoming and safe experience. Fermoy Municipal District is home to many beautiful towns and villages and these improvement works will ensure that they remain great places to live, work and visit.”
