Plans lodged for new Blarney store
A supermarket chain has applied for planning permission for a store and cafe, which if granted, would create up to 40 jobs. Lidl Ireland announced this week that a planning application had been lodged for what it described as a "state-of-the-art Lidl store".
In conjunction with the landowner, a Lidl spokesperson said that the supermarket is working with architects and planners to create a bespoke design in keeping with the area to ensure that the new development will contribute positively to Blarney. The store will create 30 new local jobs with the retailer in Blarney, while the café on site will create 10 new jobs. The planned store will incorporate a range of sustainability features including a certified energy management system, electric vehicle charger spaces and a solar panel system.
The retailer plans to include a green roof which will be partially covered in vegetation. The green roof absorbs rainwater and provides insulation reducing the need for in store drainage systems.
A spokesperson for Lidl said: “The new proposed store will also support many local suppliers in the region including West Cork Distillers, who supply Lidl with award-winning whiskeys and gins and Dundalgan Irish Whiskey.
“The distillery has been supplying Lidl since 2015 and the retailer has invested more than €12 million into the business to date, including facilitating the export of their best-selling products to Lidl stores in 16 countries across Europe.”
