Threshold help homeless mother and new-born baby

“We have fresh air, food and a lovely home to sleep in. We have everything we need.”

Those are the words a Cork woman who spoke to the Cork Independent after she found suitable accommodation for her and her baby.

Jane, whose name has been changed, was helped by Threshold’s Access Housing Unit which works by matching landlords with prospective tenants who are at risk of homelessness or living in temporary accommodation.

Jane said: “I gave birth to my baby and five months later I received a letter from my landlord saying that she was moving back into the property and I had to leave. I received this letter one month before the contract was due to end. I ended up residing in temporary accommodation as I could not find another place for myself and my baby to live during this time. I was in a B&B for seven and a half weeks.”

The aim of the Access Housing Unit programme is to assist people to access accommodation in the private rented sector, through collaboration with local landlords and local authorities.

“I previously received support from the Access Housing Unit prior to securing my last tenancy. I re-engaged with the service when I received a letter from my landlord saying that she was moving back into the property. I ended up in temporary accommodation and the Access Housing Unit began sourcing accommodation for me and my child,” explained Jane.

“Staff at the Access Housing Unit contacted me to ask if I was willing to live outside of Cork city. A two-bedroom property became available and a viewing was arranged for me to see it. I was very happy with the property and decided to accept it.”

Threshold says it needs more property owners to sign up for the programme in Cork city and county.

When asked if she would recommend the programme, Jane said: “Yes, I would as it helped me to secure a lovely home. My accommodation is located in a quiet area where there is fresh air and nice places to walk with my child.”

Jane said her life is “brilliant” at the moment.

“I am happy and thankful for what I have. We have fresh air, food and a lovely home to sleep in. We have everything we need.”

As for the future, Jane said: “I am living day to day as you never know what happens in the future. We are breathing and happy to be alive. Thanks to everyone in Threshold. I am very appreciative for what everyone has done for me.”

Threshold’s helpline remains available Monday to Friday, 9am-9pm at 1800-454454, and via its website at threshold.ie/advice/help for any renter in need of advice or support.
