Two stops in the right direction

Bus Éireann has announced two new county Cork stops on its Expressway Cork to Galway route.

From this Sunday, services on route 51 will stop for the first time in the villages of Rathduff and New Twopothouse.

The new stops will benefit from 14 daily services and will connect the villages to Cork city, Limerick, Shannon Airport and Galway.

The bus stop at Rathduff is on the N20 south of the Old Halfway House and the bus stop at New Twopothouse is outside the local post office.

Eleanor Farrell, Chief Commercial Officer, Bus Éireann said: “As part of Bus Éireann’s ongoing commitment to making better connections between cities, towns and villages across Ireland, we are constantly looking for opportunities to improve our services to reach growing communities.”

Local Cllr Liam Madden added: “As a councillor, this issue has always been of huge importance to me and the communities I represent, especially as I am from a rural background myself and understand the importance of frequent, reliable public transport to get to work and college, to the airport and to access services in nearby cities and towns. I want to thank everyone involved in this process.

“The connections that the two new stops will facilitate to surrounding towns and villages to Shannon Airport and to the cities of Cork, Limerick and Galway are incredibly important for these two communities along the N20.’”

A recent report by KPMG valued Bus Éireann’s contribution to the Cork economy at €40 million. There are 1,280 Bus Éireann bus stops in Cork, with 685 of these within 2km of hospitals and 391 stops within 2km of higher education institutions.

The company employs 570 people who live in county Cork and in addition to Expressway services and a number of rural stage-carriage routes, Bus Éireann operate the Cork city bus service, which carried almost 16 million passengers in 2019.
