Houses evacuated in Mayfield

A number of houses were evacuated on Tuesday night after a suspicious device was discovered in a Mayfield close to an occupied house.

Residents in an estate off the Old Youghal Road were evacuated and gardaí were called to the scene. They cordoned off the area and called the Defence Forces’ explosive ordnance disposal unit. After the device was examined, it was found to not be viable soon after and the cordon was lifted. Gardaí said investigations are ongoing. There have been no arrests.

The incident has been linked to other illegal activity on the northside of the city.
