Plan to boost food production

A new strategy for the the agri-food sector led by stakeholders was launched recently and aims to establish Ireland as a world leader in sustainable food systems.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue recently announced the publication of a formal implementation plan for Food Vision 2030.

Minister McConalogue said: “Food Vision 2030 is a landmark for the Irish agri-food sector and has the potential to further enhance our agriculture, food, forestry and marine sectors in the period to 2030.

“Food Vision 2030 sets out an ambitious, yet achievable, pathway to sustainability in all its dimensions – environmental, economic and social. Implementation is well under way, with many of its actions already commenced. The Food Vision Environmental Group and the Food Vision Dairy Group are progressing priority actions.

“In particular, the Food Vision Dairy Group is developing a plan to manage the environmental footprint of the dairy sector in a sustainable way. At the core what we want to achieve is a roadmap to keep our farmers and fishers as well as their families and businesses doing what they do best – producing world-class food in a safe, sustainable and traceable manner.”

Food Vision 2030 was developed by a committee of agri-food stakeholders using a food systems approach. Its vision is that Ireland will become a world leader in sustainable food systems by pursuing four missions:

1. A climate smart, environmentally sustainable agri-food sector

2. Viable and resilient primary producers, with enhanced wellbeing

3. Food that is safe, nutritious and appealing, trusted and valued at home and abroad

4. An innovative, competitive and resilient sector, driven by technology and talent

The implementation plan details the stakeholders, deliverables and timeframes for each of the actions set out in the Food Vision 2030 Strategy.

This week, the Minister will chair the third High-Level Implementation Committee meeting of Food Vision 2030, which monitors and facilitates progress towards the 22 goals set out under the four missions.

The Minister concluded: “The success of the strategy will depend on effective implementation and oversight. I am committed to work with the sector in achieving the ambition it has set out in Food Vision 2030, to become a world leader in sustainable food systems over the next decade, delivering significant benefits for the Irish agri-food sector, for Irish society and the environment.”
