Let’s hear it, Cork!
Things might get loud this weekend when an event raising awareness around positive mental health returns to Cork city.
Leeside songwriter Myles Gaffney and friends will present Make Some Noise Cork in the Smurfit Theatre at Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Shandon, from 7.30pm this Saturday.
Returning for its 4th year, the event aims to raise mental health awareness while also signposting people to the services and resources available in their localities.
Make Some Noise Cork is presented in association with Shine A Light Suicide & Mental Health Awareness CLG.
A spokesperson for the charity said organisers are delighted to see the event return in-person after moving online during the pandemic.
They said: “These past years have been extremely difficult for us as a nation. People have been very resilient, but also we have come under a lot of pressure as a result of the pandemic, and the challenge is to maintain a positive outlook on how we can move forward and help each other. We can achieve this by reaching out and supporting one another.”
Organisers have changed the line-up for this year’s event by adding some of Cork’s most talented artists including The Lost Gecko, Kabin Studio Projects featuring Misneach, The Kabin Crew and Musical Neighbourhoods. There will also be a special appearance by renowned Cork comedian Chris Kent.
There will also be a raffle on the night for 2 tickets for Manchester United’s opening game of the season, as well as 4 €50 vouchers and a signed Manchester City Jersey by lkay Gündo an donated by Manchester City through the Cork supporters branch.
Make Some Noise Cork kicks off at 7.30pm in the Smurfit Theatre at Dance Cork Firkin Crane, Shandon. Tickets are €8 and
Shine A Light
Shine A Light Suicide and Mental Health Awareness is made up of several highly motivated local people and representatives of both statutory and voluntary services.
The main aim of the group is to continually work toward lowering the incidence of suicide in the communities represented and increase awareness around mental health and suicide by promoting openly and direct conversation about suicide and related issues.
It is the core belief of Shine a Light that community groups have a vital role to play in suicide prevention work and that it is simply not possible to progress any national level agenda without strong community engagement and active support.
Since its establishment, the group has been continually growing and expanding while exploring ways of building supports which are easy to access and are affordable to the communities it serves.
Shine a Light Suicide Awareness Group provides low cost counselling; SafeTALK and ASIST Suicide Awareness Trainings, bereavement support groups, as well as signposting people to supports offered by other organisations.
