The tea part takes place on Saturday.

Tea party in memory of “wonderful” Betty

Come along for a cuppa this Saturday when a tea party will be held in memory of an avid Cork fundraiser who dedicated her life to helping others.

Cork woman Betty O Riordan passed away in 2017 after a lifetime of raising money for various local charities such as Penny Dinners and Marymount Hospice.

Betty’s Tea Party will take place on Saturday in Thomond Square on the Old Blackrock Road from 10am-2pm, with all funds raised going directly to Marymount Hospice.

There will be freshly baked cakes, tea and coffee, and a barbeque, as well as music from the Cork Light Orchestra and singer-songwriter Bernard Wallace.

Event organisers and Betty’s daughter Teresa Murphy said her mother was a “wonderful woman” who raised well over €100,000 for local Cork charities in the years before she passed.

“Her passion for helping the community was clear for all to see although she never would let you praise her,” said Teresa.

She continued: “Betty helped numerous charities over the years including Cork Penny Dinners, Lough Scouts, Ethiopian Deaf Project, Marymount Hospice and so many more. Now, to remember Betty, we’re doing just as she would want – fundraise for Marymount!”

Saturday’s tea party will be the second fundraiser organised by the group for Marymount Hospice. In addition to the tea party, the organisers are running a virtual raffle for anyone who can’t join on the day but would like to support Marymount Hospice.
