Diarmuid Ó Drisceoi will explore the River Blackwater in a new 4 part documentary series.

Cork river gets new TV series

The first episode of a new documentary series telling the story of one of Cork’s most iconic rivers will air on TG4 next week.

Presented by Diarmuid Ó Drisceoil, ‘An Abhainn Mhór na Mumhan’ will bring viewers on a journey along the River Blackwater as it has never been seen before.

Following in the footsteps of late Irish writer Annraoi Ó Liatháin and using his book ‘Cois Móire’ as a guide, Ó Drisceoil will travel from the river’s source in Kerry, through the Rebel County to its mouth in Youghal.

Along the way, Ó Drisceoil will bring the river’s vast history and personality to life as he captures and reflects upon the wealth of the river’s natural ecology.

Largely inaccessible by land due to forestry and private ownership, the river’s natural beauty has been preserved over the centuries, making it a uniquely fascinating subject.

Commenting on the new series, Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Danny Collins said he is certain viewers will be captivated by the distinctive character of the region.

“With everything from the military history of Fermoy to the enchanting music of the Sliabh Luachra music trail, the majestic Drishane Castle in Millstreet, and the famed Raleigh Quarter in Youghal, I would like to congratulate Cormorant Films for producing this excellent series,” the mayor said.

Produced and directed by Darina Clancy Cormorant Films, the first episode of the 4 part series will air next Wednesday at 9.30pm on TG4.
