Spike Island to shine bright
Marguerite Kiely
One of Ireland's most iconic landmarks, Spike Island, will celebrate its 85th birthday next month.
The occasion, on Saturday 8 July, will be marked with a family fun evening and fireworks display, commemorating the historic handover of Spike Island from Britain to Ireland on 11 July 1938.
Visitors can expect a special evening which will kick off by ferry across Cork Harbour, one of the world's largest natural harbours. This is followed by a guided tour where the island's history comes to life.
Guests can explore the fort, museums, and exhibitions, and embark on the stunning walking trail. Attendees can also look forward to pop-up musical performances, face painters, and a host of family-friendly activities.
As night falls, the stage is set for the highlight of the evening —a fireworks extravaganza illuminating the skies above Cork Harbour. There will be a staggering 1,300 fireworks lighting up the darkness, which will symbolise the inmates who lost their lives during Spike Island's time as a prison.
To ensure everything runs smoothly during the event, boats will start departing at 5.15pm. Those who arrive early will have plenty of time to explore the island's attractions and be among the first to leave once the event wraps up, say the organisers. Return boats will start operating at 10.30pm, departing every 10 minutes.
Due to anticipated high attendance for this special celebration, it is advised to book your tickets online in advance to secure a spot. Visit spikeislandcork.ie to reserve tickets.
